Principal's Message

Welcome to the General Herkimer Magnet School website! General Herkimer is a K-5 elementary school of 600 students. Our student population is very diverse with students from many different backgrounds. We are very proud of our Magnet School Theme of Technology and Science discovery which implements an inquiry based, hands on approach to teaching science and technology. General Herkimer believes in innovative and diverse learning experiences in a multicultural environment. Through collaboration and team planning, teachers create lessons that tailor individual needs by recognizing multiple intelligences and hands on discovery. Each month classes at General Herkimer will participate in “Totally Outrageous Activity Days” (T.O.A.D.). T.O.A.D. will incorporate fun and creative lessons, using manipulatives and hands on materials. Teachers and staff use the latest research based strategies to ensure that students and meeting and exceeding State and National Standards. To help students become better citizens we focus on a MEGA skill each month for character education and have an active Safety Patrol squad. In addition we offer the Please Stand Up leadership program to fifth grade students. We have also launched our Green Team for recycling this year. The General Herkimer teaching staff is committed to meeting high standards in teaching and learning. These are just a few of the programs we offer to deliver a comprehensive education for all!
